St. Andrews Bay was visited by Spanish explorers between 1516-1540 and the first English settlers came in 1765.  The old town, St. Andrew, was founded in 1820 by settlers from Georgia.   The modern site of Panama City was established in 1909 and got its name because it was on a direct line between Chicago and the Panama Canal.  Panama City's deep, landlocked harbor was visualized as a natural distribution point for Latin America.   Some of the best deep water fishing in the world is enjoyed off the coast of Panama City.
